We couldn't resist the slightly 'tongue-in-cheek' Shipwreck, an 8 Year Old Cask Strength Cider Brandy, aged in barrels that were landed from the wrecked container ship, Napoli (grounded off Branscombe in 2007). The new Allier oak barrels (originally destined for South Africa) have added an extra dimension of finesse and spice to the cider brandy. A particularly well-defined 'village' Puligny with an exotic floral-fruit nose, great intensity and richness, all balanced by a fresh acidity. Definitely punching above its weight and exhibiting superior style and balance. Up until the 2003 vintage, Jean-Louis and his brother, Alain, had been running their father's vineyards together and we had been dealing with them for nearly fifteen years. From the 2003 harvest onwards, these are now two very separate estates and we have decided to follow Jean-Louis because, we felt, his wines had rather more definition and concentration than those of his brother's.Jean Louis' scrupulous attention to detail, and desire to keep to low yields, has secured him a reputation for great Puligny. Finely balanced and very concentrated, these wines have a remarkable purity of Chardonnay fruit with each of the Premier Crus showing off their typicity and terroir.
The colour is dense and deep. The complex, expressive and indulgent nose unveils aromas of ripe fruit and spicy notes on aeration. The full and round palate shows good complexity. There are notes of well-ripened black fruit, liquorice and vanilla. The tannic structure and freshness of the fruit are perfectly in balance. Long and persistent finish. A very great Dame that can (still) wait!

The rum has been aged for 8 years in Jamaica in a tropical climate, which is equivalent to almost 25 years of maturation in the European climate. The nose is voluptuous and intense, with notes of caramelised apple and sweet spices mixed with a delicate touch of smokiness. Produced with unique and partly secret methods that have remained unchanged since the 18th century, this 8 year old rum is the flagship of the range, perfectly embodying the aromatic complexity and versatility that Hampden Estate is known for, making it a great allrounder for both sipping and mixing. It represents the quintessential expression of the Hampden Estate style
Blackish crimson. Leafily aromatic. Light tannins. Very easy and charming but not one of the most ambitious, though there are ripe tannins on the very end.
St.Julien - Second wine of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Chateau Beaucaillou had the name Ducru prefixed to it in honour of a previous owner of the estate. Ironically under the Ducru family the buidlings fell into a state of some disrepair and it was only in the mid 1800s when the chateau was purchased by the highly-reputed Negociant family of Nathaniel Johnston that the necessary improvements were made. Ducru is now owned by Jean-Eugene Borie. The vineyards on the estate are affectionately called ' des beaux cailloux' (the beautiful pebbles) and cover 50 hectares of gravel crests adjacent to the Gironde. It is undoubtedly one of the great wines of the Medoc.?ÿ The grape mix is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot with 5% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Chateau Montifaud has belonged to the Vallet family for six generations now, the vineyard being created in 1837 by Augustin and has seen the succession of Pierre, Maurice, Louis and Michel. Laurent came to join his father and grandfather in October 2000. According to the family tradition, when a son joins his father, a part of the cognac distilled in that year is set preciously aside and will only be sold by the future generations.
Magnums Château Talbot 4ème Cru ClasséOne of the best-known Bordeaux wine estates to a UK audience, not surprisingly because it takes its name from John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, who in 1492 suffered the ignominy of losing the battle, and with it his life, which allowed Bordeaux and its vineyards to slip back into French control after belonging to the British Crown for over 340 years. In the last century it has been owned by the Cordier family, and the red wine of the estate has long enjoyed a reputation for solid dependability. It is one of the largest estates in the Médoc and its 102 hectare single vineyard is situated inland from the Gironde River and west of the hamlet of St Julien-Beychevelle. Chateau Talbot is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot(26%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (5%) - the vinification includes 18 months maturation in small oak barriques (50% new).Talbot has a reputation for consistency and is one of the most carefully made and...
A full-bodied, intensely sweet white wine made exclusively from specific noble rot Pinot Gris grapes, these are bottles are the result of the remarkable collaboration of nature, the wine-grower... and luck ! Henry and Catherine Fuchs are in their mid-forties and the third generation of the family to run this splendid 10 hectare domaine situated in the quality heartland of Alsace at Ribeauville, a village renowned for its rich and opulent dry white wines. Established in 1922, the Fuchs' family estate was one of the first to start bottling their own wines in 1945. Their vineyards are mainly situated in excellent sites throughout the commune of Ribeauville, with a further 20% to be found in the neighbouring communes of Hunawihr and Bergheim. The Fuchs use no weed-killers or man-made fertilisers on their vineyards which goes a long way to restricting yields, but they also prune very tightly so that their final rendement (yield) is at least 20% below the village average. In the winery,...
